Touring Theatre
I love acting but it isn’t for the faint hearted.
Touring theatre is exciting but it will test your stamina, organisation, and vibe. I’ve recently finished a tour of a hard hitting play called ‘Silent Approach’. I leaned a lot from this tour and other tours I have been on.
Here are some tips that help performers actually survive and thrive on tour:
Protect your energy
• Touring is social — but you don’t have to be “on” all the time
• Schedule alone time to reset
Look after your body
• Stretch daily
• Warm up your voice properly
• Stay hydrated
• Avoid living on takeaway (even grabbing fruit/yogurt helps)
Sleep is gold
• Bring an eye mask + earplugs as Hotels can be noisy and unfamiliar
Stay organised
• Unpack the same way in every room
• Keep show essentials in one dedicated bag
Arrive early
• Touring tech runs on tight schedules
• Being calm beats being rushed
Be kind to the crew
• They can save your life when things go wrong
Mark your dressing space
• Tape + labels stop costume chaos
Mental wellbeing
• Call home regularly
• Journal or vlog the journey
• Celebrate small wins
PS. KEEP IT FUN (WITHOUT IRRITATING THE CAST AND CREW)
The footage is behind the scenes with 'Silent Approach' which will be touring again this year. Meanwhile, visit a Theatre next time you are in London or support local theatre.
